Square or Hex? Here's the Breakdown
The Square Kelly (4-Sided)
This is your daily workhorse. It's the industry standard for most water well rigs because it's simple to maintain and gives your drive bushings plenty of surface area to grab onto. It's a bit cheaper than the hex, making it the go-to for standard vertical wells.
The Hexagonal Kelly (6-Sided)
If you're planning on hitting deeper aquifers or dealing with high-torque situations, the hex is the way to go. Because it has six sides, the rotation is naturally smoother, and it's less likely to "slap" against the bushings. It's tougher on the corners, meaning it lasts longer before you see any rounding.
A quick reality check
Keep in mind that a Hex Kelly is beefier and usually requires a specific drive bushing setup. If you're upgrading from a square one, don't forget you'll need to swap your bushings too, or it won't fit the table.

Q: Why is my Kelly vibrating and "walking" in the table?
Usually, it means your drive bushings are worn out or the Kelly itself has taken a slight "set" (a bend). Even a 1/8-inch bend can feel like an earthquake at high RPM. Our pipes are straightened to much tighter tolerances to stop that wobble before it starts.
Q: How long will the corners last before they round off?
It depends on how much "slap" is in your drive. If you keep your bushings tight and greased, a Water well square drill pipe made from 4145H steel should last you years. If you let the bushings get loose, the corners will start to "mushroom," and you'll have trouble sliding it through the table.
Q: Can I get a custom length for a compact rig?
